"I had a couple of destinations in mind," Schneid said. "I also met with (WVU) World Regions Professor Karen Culcasi who gave me a few ideas."
As Shelly floats from one place to another, she longs to find a home. One day she washes ashore at Myrtle Beach, where a little girl named Sarah scoops her up and takes her home with her so that Shelly gets her wish.
"My intended audience is kindergarten through second grade," Schneid said. "I've been reading to preschool through fourth and fifth grade. They like it, too. There are a lot of educational aspects and opportunities to learn about the world. Every class has really enjoyed the book, which is an amazing feeling. Kids like the different countries, and they like it when Shelly finds a home. To see people have a reaction to it is amazing."
Children ask lots of questions, including when she will write another book.
"I have a couple of ideas for more books," she said.
"Shelly on the Seashore" by Adeline Schneid is available through Amazon, author house.com, and Barnes & Noble. Cost is $20 for the soft-cover or $3.99 for the eBook.
