A new recreational sports league will offer co-ed opportunities throughout the year.
The Athletics and Social League, organized by longtime friends Hollis Lewis and John Pennington, is taking signups for co-ed flag football and beach volleyball, both of which will be played outside this spring and summer.
Pennington, a football coach for Concord University, and Hollis Lewis, a recent law school graduate, played sports together in high school.
Pennington credits Lewis with coming up with the idea.
"Hollis lived in Orlando a long time and he didn't know very many people so he joined a sports league. He asked me if I wanted to do that in Charleston. We based it on that model."
The two have secured field and court time for the summer sports - beach volleyball at Magic Island and flag football at Coonskin Park's Schoenbaum field.
They're encouraging interested sports folks - men and women - to come to Adelphia Sports Bar on Capitol Street Tuesday evening to sign up.
Cost is $500 for a football team (eight players) and $325 for a volleyball team (five players). Individuals also may sign up to join a team for $50.
Pennington said the football season will run May 25 to July 13 on either Tuesdays or Saturdays and volleyball will run May 27 to July 18 on Mondays or Thursdays. Play dates will be determined by teams and their schedules.
Players who can't come Tuesday evening may sign up online at www.athleticandsocialleague.com.
Pennington and Lewis have basic equipment such as balls and football flags.
Going forward, Pennington said they plan to offer sports year-round, including good old-fashioned dodgeball.
"It was a big deal to us to keep it family-oriented, that's why it is co-ed," he said. Both venues - Coonskin and Magic Island - are conducive to having children playing nearby.
