Many veterinarians have a low-income program. To qualify, proof of income is required and the surgery is done at a discount.
In addition, the Kanawha County Spay and Neuter Taskforce and the Help for Animals Clinic in Barboursville assist cat owners with the cost to spay and neuter. Some even provide vouchers to people who qualify.
Lifnik said pockets across the country are seeing a slight decline in cat intake and euthanasia. She mentioned parts of New England and the Pacific Northwest.
Lifnik said the overpopulation is still immense and everyone needs to work with neighbors in pursuit of a better outcome for the cats.
"This problem cannot be solved over night," Lifnik said. "Everyone is going to have to pitch in and help by adopting from shelters and getting their cats spayed and neutered in order to put an end to cat overpopulation."
Clark said the unhealthiest cats are put down first. Cats that have been at the shelter for extended periods are usually next. Once the cats have been euthanized, they are cremated on site.
Those wishing to adopt must complete an application at the shelter. The animal must be spayed or neutered before it can be released to its new home.
