A mother and daughter from the reality show "Dance Moms" will be at Dancing Unlimited in Hurricane on June 29 along with a choreographer who will teach workshops.
Cathy Jean Nesbitt-Stein and her daughter, Vivi-Anne, will meet and greet guests at the dance studio from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mitchell Finke, who has worked with them, will teach workshops during that time. The workshop for ages 10 and under will be held 9:30 a.m. to noon. A workshop for ages 11 and older will be held 1 to 3:30 p.m. Cost is $65 per dancer and $25 for others. Registration deadline is June 19.
"It's exciting with all the hype about reality TV," said Beverly Barnett, owner of Dancing Unlimited. "It's nice to bring Lifetime to Hurricane."
"Dance Moms" is a Lifetime series with instructor Abby Lee Miller of the Abby Lee Dance Company in Pittsburgh. The show includes young dancers, their mothers, and plenty of drama.
Nesbitt-Stein has her own dance studio in Canton, Ohio, called Candy Apple's Dance Center. She began taking her daughter to the Abby Lee Dance Company for further instruction but was met with resistance by several other moms. She eventually left Abby Lee Dance Company but returned to the series with her dancers prepared to compete.
"Now she is on the show competing against Abby," Barnett said.
Mitchell Finke, who has done choreography with Nesbitt- Stein, has also worked with the show choir at Hurricane High School, Barnett said. A Hurricane High parent put Barnett in contact with him and they corresponded about bringing a workshop to her dance studio.
She doesn't believe the upcoming workshop will lead to an appearance on the show but she intends to ask about that.
The show airs on Lifetime at 9 p.m. Tuesdays.
Barnett, who has been in business 28 years, offers classes for various ages ranging from ballet, lyrical, and pointe, to tap, jazz, and hiphop. There are toddler classes called "Mom and Me." Special needs classes are also offered.
Dancing Unlimited is located at 2825 Rear Main St. in Hurricane.
