The shower is set for 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Covenant House, 600 Shrewsbury St. in Charleston. Hamra will be on hand to meet guests. Punch and cake will be served.
Wedding shower gift suggestions include blankets, towels, kitchen towels, dish soap, laundry detergent, all-purpose cleaner, mops and brooms. These items will benefit many of the Covenant House programs such as "Housing First," which helps provide housing for people with chronic issues that prevent them from being able to maintain housing on their own.
The program is geared to help meet basic needs as people recover from issues that led to homelessness.
Baby shower gift suggestions include diapers, baby wipes, receiving blankets, bottles, Dreft detergent, fingernail clippers, thermometers, baby shampoo, Desitin, clothing, shoes, strollers, and car seats. These gifts will help families provide for children at a time when there are more expenses and fewer resources.
For example, the Emergency Assistance Program helps families who have suffered an unexpected situation such as a job loss or fire.
While Hamra does not like being in the limelight, she figures it's worth it to get assistance for people who could use a helping hand.
"This has been fun," she said. "I'm a little out of my comfort zone. I'm not a person who seeks a lot of attention."
She hopes the idea will motivate others to get help for their favorite charities on special occasions.
