Jon Ashton wants you to prepare healthy meals for your family and he believes it's possible, with a little planning.
Yet you won't get a lecture by the good-natured British chef.
If anything, Ashton will cheerily tell you to enjoy food and enjoy cooking and above all, to cut yourself a break if you aren't perfect.
"Get in the kitchen. Go with the flow. If you make a mistake, no problem - I make at least five mistakes all the time," Ashton said. "If it's bitter, add a little sweet. If it's bland, add salt. Just know that you've got people who love you" and are grateful you are cooking," he said.
Ashton brought his culinary skills - honed in some of England's finer restaurants - across the pond two years ago when he moved to Chicago. He currently serves as food correspondent for The Daily Buzz morning radio show, is a contributing editor for Parade and Dash magazines and has appeared on television shows such as "The Today Show."
Currently touring for Dash in its Dash Around the Table Tour, Ashton makes a stop in Charleston Sept. 21 for a cooking program at the Civic Center Little Theater.
He'll cook and chat about cooking and offer up some life lessons in enjoying good food, something he learned to do as a boy in Liverpool and living with his beloved grandmother, who brought him into the kitchen to learn how to make the delicious breads and stews she served up with love.
"Granny was brilliant," he said. "I always say we didn't have too many pennies in our pocket but we had lots of laughs in our bellies."
When she died while Ashton was a pre-teen, he comforted himself with food - a bit too much.
