And, as your momma always told you, breakfast really is the most important meal of the day:
* A study presented at the recent Learning Connection Summit found that brain scans of children who eat breakfast show more activity (thus, more learnin') than children who skip the meal.
* Researchers at Cornell University found that people who skip breakfast tend to crave more unhealthy carbohydrates later in the day.
* A study from the Dairy Research Institute found that people who skip breakfast weigh more and have more unhealthy habits than those who eat breakfast. Skippers consume 40 percent more sweets, 55 percent more soft drinks, 45 percent fewer vegetables and 30 percent less fruit than people who eat breakfast.
* And a University of Minnesota study found that people who eat breakfast daily are 34 percent less likely to develop Type 2 diabetes than those who don't. They are also 43 percent less likely to become obese.
Pretty compelling figures, yes?
And speaking of Huntington, cloudy or not, I visited a great newish restaurant there this past weekend.
In town for a concert, I met a friend for dinner beforehand who suggested we try out Backyard Pizza & Raw Bar, located downtown in the space formerly occupied by the original Chili Willi's on Fourth Avenue.
I was initially skeptical about a place that both tossed pizzas and shucked oysters (what an odd combination, and could they do both well?) but my fears were unfounded. This place rocks.
A variety of off-the-beaten path pizzas (think Pies & Pints creative) are built with dough made fresh daily and fired to delicious perfection in a brick oven. The seafood is flown in fresh, too.
Pizza choices are plentiful, so we sampled two.
The Woo-Tang featured hickory-grilled chicken, bleu cheese crumbles, freshly shredded mozzarella, roasted red peppers, diced jalapeno and red onion, finished with cilantro and drizzled with honey, Sriracha and "lime schwing" sauce. I was afraid it might be a bit spicy, but the honey balanced a mild heat perfectly.
The Seafood Fra Diavolo came topped with grilled shrimp, fried calamari, mozzarella, spicy marinara and parsley with fresh-squeezed lemon. Another hit.
Backyard Pizza & Raw Bar is located at 841 Fourth Ave. in Huntington. Call 304-697-7437 or visit www.backywardcraftedpizza. com for menus and more details.
