CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A quick search of prices at large retail stores shows a 40-inch, name-brand, flat-screen TV runs $425 or so.
Get out during holiday door-busting sales and you can probably beat that. Heck, maybe you've had a good year and can treat your family to a 60-inch TV. All the better to see your favorite sports teams and movies.
Ah, to be so fortunate.
There's a West Virginia mom who would love to have an extra $425 this season. It would just about pay for a new set of dentures that would help her become more employable. The set she has — and keep in mind she is just 35 — is many years old and worn out.
A single dad raising kids on his own could use that $425 toward a new sofa; a single mom would happily put it toward beds for her kids, now sleeping on the floor.
That same $425 would purchase enough nutritional supplement for two elderly people for almost an entire year.
Today marks the official start of the holiday shopping season — because now we have early Black Friday sales. It also marks the start of a holiday giving campaign the Daily Mail has administered since 1961.
We hope that while you consider joyfully giving to your friends and loved ones in coming weeks, you'll also consider joyfully giving to a cause that has been helping needy families for more than five decades.
The Daily Mail's Neediest Cases Appeal has a simple premise: to meet needs that aren't readily met by other social service programs. The categories include medical and dental, household items, appliances, furniture, educational services and home repair.
Social programs can go only so far to help those in need.
There are programs that help pay for safe housing. But none that provide furnishings.
A family can get help buying food. But how about a stove or refrigerator?
Medicaid will pay for an adult to have his or her teeth pulled if necessary. But no program provides dentures.
The Daily Mail's Neediest Cases Appeal sets out to fill some of those gaps.
