CHARLESTON, W.Va. - This 61-year-old man is a caretaker for his wife, who has debilitating arthritis and is in pain much of the time.
He has health issues of his own, the couple's caseworker said.
He was involved in an accident at work some time ago. An explosion damaged one of his eyes. He eventually lost sight in that eye, and that in turn puts strain on the other eye.
Glasses help, but his prescription is now nearly three years old.
Now retired, he draws $573 a month in Social Security benefits, and his 57-year-old wife receives $145 in Supplemental Security Income. They also receive $221 in food stamps.
It's enough for them to barely get by, paying for basic expenses such as rent, utilities and food.
There's really nothing left over for luxuries, and unfortunately new eyeglasses are on the luxury list right now.
The caseworker said the man talks most about his wife and his concern for her and puts his needs second.
