CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Money was already tight for this couple when they agreed to take three foster children into their home.
The woman gets $450 a month in child support for a 17-year-old boy from a previous marriage. Her husband, the boy's stepfather, earns up to $2,189 a month in his seasonal job, but he works only when the weather is nice and right now, there is no work.
They receive $253 a month in food stamps and another $340 a month from West Virginia Works as caretakers because one of them is related to the foster children, who are 10, 9, and 8.
When the young children were removed from their home by Child Protective Services, the couple opened their hearts and home to them. They immediately had to spend money to treat the children for lice and to get them much-needed dental care. The youngest needed psychological counseling because of abuse issues, and that is ongoing, said the caseworker who works with the family.
The family lives in a mobile home, where payments on the trailer and land total $240 a month. With other basic living expenses, they often don't know how they will make ends meet.
The mother, who told the caseworker God would give her strength, is always thinking of others.
"She even prayed for me because I was having trouble with my feet," the caseworker said. While needs are many, some basics would make life a little easier for this family.
The mobile home floor is weak in some areas. The father could do the repair work if he had supplies. They also need a new dryer and some dressers for holding the clothing of the family that suddenly grew from three to six.
Needs: $450 for three dressers, $300 for plywood, and $350 for an electric dryer
