This 24-year-old single mother has come a long way in becoming self-sufficient.
She no longer receives public assistance, other than a medical card for her 6-year-old daughter.
She earns just under $1,200 a month. She has the good fortune to live rent-free in a home owned by a relative, though she does pay utilities.
The family's caseworker said the young mom does well with her daughter. A lifetime of poverty has taken a toll on the woman's teeth, however.
She had paid little by little to have all of them removed.
"She hates being without teeth at 24," the caseworker said. No doubt.
The woman simply cannot afford dentures right now, and it is starting to affect her health.
"She is very underweight," the caseworker said. Dentures would help her appearance, her self-esteem and, most importantly, her well-being.
Needs: $435 for dentures
