She's a middle-aged woman who cares for the elderly but needs some help taking care of herself.
She has had a medical condition for at least the last 10 years that causes pressure to build up behind her eyes. This affects her vision, and she's already legally blind in one eye.
But that doesn't stop her from working hard to take care of others.
Her doctors have advised her not to work, not to lift anything, not even to bend over, since it could make her condition worse.
Her caseworker said she doesn't heed their advice, however, because she cannot afford to quit work. At 47, she is responsible for raising a 14-year-old child.
While her income isn't high -- she brings home $1,600 a month -- she makes too much money to qualify for food stamps. She does receive some Medicaid coverage, though it does not cover vision needs.
"She could cause herself to go blind," a caseworker said. "She doesn't miss work no matter how bad she feels."
