Tenth annual dance-a-thon tabbed for Friday in Hurricane
Arts in Action, a Christian-based academy for the creative and performing arts, will be hosting its 10th annual fundraising dance-a-thon on Friday, Nov. 8.
The 10th-anniversary dance-a-thon will be held at Arts in Action's Hurricane campus at 2658 Main St. from 4:15 to 6:15 p.m. on Friday.
During that time, many generous hoofers, of all ages, will put their left and right feet in, taking their left and right feet out and, in unison, shaking them all about. Helping potential and current young dancers is, at heart and "sole," what it's all about, however.
"It's Arts in Action's biggest fundraiser of the year," said the Rev. Dr. Melissa Pratt, whose daughter is a student at the academy.
"The money generally goes for scholarships," Pratt said. "They do a lot at Urban Stage on the West Side in Charleston, for families that cannot afford the tuition. I believe they have about 150 students there, and this is their biggest way to fund 120 children who live under the poverty level. Without the scholarships, these kids wouldn't have the opportunity to study dance and martial arts there."
During Friday's dance-a-thon, Pratt said, participants "from toddlers to grandparents" will take to the dance floor to earn their pledges.
"Dances that will be done will include the Hokey Pokey, circle dances and dance style from every era," said the Scott Depot resident.
"People who want to participate may make a tax-deductible gift to Arts in Action. If people want to 'adopt' an at-risk, underprivileged child, they may do so at the cost of $350, which takes care of their costume and recital fees. Their instruction is donated by the teachers of Arts in Action," Pratt said.
Arts in Action has also recently introduced a new, weekly "Mommy and Me" class for toddlers and their mothers or grandmothers.
The class meets at 11 a.m. Mondays at the Arts in Action's Hurricane location.
"Mommy and Me" participants will perform at the Clay Center for the Arts and Science's "Arts Celebration" at the end of the season.
"Mommy and Me" registration is available by calling 304-419-4446.
Along with the Hurricane campus, Arts in Action has locations in St. Albans, Poca and on Charleston's West Side at the Urban Arts facility.
Financial aid is available for qualifying individuals.
