CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A Charleston woman was killed and a Jackson County man was arrested over the weekend after he crashed an all-terrain vehicle while allegedly under the influence near Fairplain.
Eric Matthew Smith, 37, of Ripley was arrested Saturday night after the accident. He had been riding with Sandra Marie Jackson, 47, of Charleston, said Cpl. Eric Cullen of the Jackson Sheriff's Department. Deputies believe Smith, who had been driving, was under the influence at the time of the crash.
Smith told deputies that he had been driving the Yamaha Rhino about 8:30 p.m. along Poverty Ridge, near Fairplain, when he began to fishtail and lost control. The Rhino struck an embankment and rolled, partially ejecting Jackson.
Cullen said the ATV landed on top of Jackson. Emergency workers pronounced her dead upon arrival.
The two were not wearing helmets. Smith suffered no injuries in the crash.
Cullen said officers noted signs Smith was intoxicated. Smith's blood was drawn at a local hospital to determine his blood alcohol content.
Smith has been charged with DUI causing death. He is being held at South Central Regional Jail. No bond has been set.
