CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A Sissonville man wrestled to the ground by sports bar patrons during an alleged armed robbery was arraigned in Kanawha Circuit Court Wednesday.
John Columbus Beane, 52, pleaded not guilty to attempted first-degree robbery. He has been incarcerated at South Central Regional Jail since his arrest.
Police and prosecutors said Beane, armed with a .410 shotgun, went to Hussons Pizza in Sissonville and tried to take cash from the register. Prosecutors accused him of then going to Linda's Sports Bar in Sissonville, pointing the gun at the bartender and demanding cash.
Patrons wrestled Beane to the ground and took the gun, then held him until officers arrived.
Beane asked for his $100,000 bond to be lowered, and a church member attended the hearing prepared to post $2,500 cash to release him, but a judge refused. His trial is scheduled for Feb. 27.
