Kanawha County Circuit Judge Duke Bloom has sentenced an Elkview Middle parent to 5 days at South Central Regional Jail on truancy charges.
Rhonda Smith pleaded guilty before Bloom. He sentenced her to jail time at 1 p.m. Monday because of her daughter's 47 absences this year.
It was Smith's second offense. She was previously sentenced to community service but did not complete that.
She will report at 1 p.m. Friday and serve her time over two consecutive weekends.
The judge admonished Smith and said he hopes this gets her attention.
He said it's the first time a Kanawha parent has been jailed on truancy charges.
