Man gets sentence in motel robbery
A man who tried to rob a Charleston motel in May was sentenced to the Anthony Center for Youthful Offenders.
Joseph Aaron McKinney, 20, of Amma walked into the Red Roof Inn on MacCorkle Avenue, told the clerk he was armed and threatened her with pepper spray. He told a judge he was under the influence of prescription medication at the time.
He was arrested shortly afterwards when police found him hiding in a storage building. He has been held at South Central Regional Jail since then.
McKinney apologized for the crime, but Kanawha Circuit Judge denied his request to be freed. He could have been sentenced for five to 18 years on the second-degree robbery charge.
