W.Va. man charged in death of boy, 3
A Parkersburg man was charged in the death of his girlfriend's 3-year-old son, police said.
Matthew Edward Lamp, 29, of 32nd Street was charged Thursday with the death of a child by a parent, guardian or custodian.
He was being held at North Central Regional Jail on unrelated charges but was interviewed Thursday at the Parkersburg Police Department for his involvement in the death of the boy, according to a news release issued by Parkersburg police.
The boy, identified only as D.K., died Wednesday afternoon at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
The boy was flown to Morgantown Sunday afternoon from Camden Clark Medical Center in Parkersburg with serious injuries. The child's mother, whose name has not been released, told police the boy was injured accidentally while playing at their Parkersburg home.
Authorities searched the home Sunday night and began interviewing neighbors and potential witnesses, the release said.
An autopsy is scheduled for today in Morgantown.
Prosecutors and detectives decided to charge Lamp after his interview. A criminal complaint alleges the child was left in his care Saturday and the child received substantial bodily injury resulting in death.
"Lamp allegedly admitted to intentionally striking the victim," the release said.
No charges have been filed against the mother, but Sgt. W.G. Collins said the investigation is ongoing.
Lamp was returned to North Central Regional Jail after his arraignment in Wood County. He is being held without bond and is set for an appearance in Wood Circuit Court in the coming days.
