CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A man who stole a banjo from a local church was sentenced to 60 days probation and 10 hours of community service.
Aaron Green, 20, of Turtle Creek pleaded guilty Thursday to petit larceny in relation to the theft at Capital City Baptist Church. Earlier this year.
He had been charged with grand larceny and breaking and entering.
Green told Kanawha Circuit Judge Tod Kaufman he stole the banjo, which belonged to a church member, in retaliation for things said to his parents. He said he intended to return the instrument, but panicked and attempted to pawn it instead. The victim, who did get the banjo back, asked the judge to give Green jail time "to teach him a lesson" and a prosecutor requested a harsher sentence. Kaufman also said Green must pay the victim $300 for the loss of the banjo case that was not recovered.
