A young man was badly injured when a car struck him Thursday on Charleston's West Side.
It happened about 7:40 p.m. on W.Va. 21, also known as Sissonville Drive, just north of Chandler Drive.
The man was walking north when the car struck him, Charleston Lt. Shawn Williams said. Witnesses told officers the man was walking north but ran to the middle of the road when a car approached.
Williams said the man was struck right along the double yellow line.
Police told Metro 911 emergency dispatchers the man was unresponsive but was breathing when they arrived. Williams said did not know the man's condition.
An officer accompanied the man to Charleston Area Medical Center's General Hospital.
Sissonville Drive was closed to traffic while officers investigated at the scene of the crash.
