A Jackson County man accused of impregnating his 14-year-old girlfriend is behind bars.
Deputies arrested Brian Belcher, 23, of Gay, Tuesday after a lengthy investigation into allegations he had been involved in a relationship with a 14-year-old girl.
Deputies began investigating in January after receiving information from Child Protective Services about a girl who was allegedly carrying the child of an 18- or 19-year-old man in Jackson County.
Investigators contacted the girl's mother on Jan. 15 and asked her to come in with the teen to talk about the allegations.
The girl told deputies she met Belcher in Spring 2012 at a skate park in Ripley and later saw him in locations around the county, according to a complaint filed in Jackson County Magistrate Court.
She said they began having sex three or four months after they met. She was five months pregnant when she met with police, the complaint indicated.
She could not tell deputies how many times she and Belcher had sex but remembered it was more than once. She said they frequented an apartment across the street from the Jackson County Courthouse.
The girl's mother brought Belcher to the sheriff's department on Jan. 29. She and Belcher smoked a cigarette together outside the building before he was questioned, the complaint said.
Belcher told deputies he had sex with the girl but only once. He said when they met, the girl told him she was 17 years old, nearly 18, and that he believed that was her age when they had sex, the complaint said.
He told the deputies he believed he was the father of the girl's baby.
Belcher was charged with third-degree sexual assault and is being held at South Central Regional Jail on $50,000 bond.
