CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- One person died and two others were injured in a crash involving a tractor-trailer and a car at 9 p.m. Tuesday.
The accident occurred on Route 119, south of Sand Plant Road near the Kanawha/Lincoln county line, authorities said today.
A 1997 Western Star tractor-trailer was hauling a load of lumber and was southbound when the vehicle struck a concrete barrier on the Steven Wayne Memorial Bridge, said Capt. B.C. Robbins of the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office.
The truck hit the unprotected median and crossed into the northbound lane striking a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta that was headed north, Robbins said.
The truck driver, David McCarter, 58, of Wellston, Ohio, was transported to Charleston Area Medical Center's General Hospital where he remained under evaluation on Tuesday.
The driver of the Volkswagen, Betty J. Sowards, 38, of Sumerco, was also transported to CAMC General. She was listed in critical condition on Tuesday, according to a hospital operator.
A passenger in her car, 16-year-old Brittany N. Sowards of Sumerco, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her body was taken to the state Medical Examiner's Office.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by Deputy T.A. Fouch.
