CHARLESTON, W.Va. - A Putnam County teen who ran away from home last week was found safe and sound, police said.
Debra Simmons called Winfield police Tuesday evening to alert officers that her granddaughter, Megan Leanne Holbert, 16, of Scott Depot was back at home, said John Perrine, Winfield police chief.
Simmons said Megan, a sophomore at Winfield High School, came to her Eleanor home that night.
The two officers who interviewed the teen reported that she was in good spirits, healthy and did not need any immediate medical attention, Perrine said.
Megan's father reported her missing when she failed to get off the school bus Friday afternoon. Perrine said the girl turned some of her schoolbooks in to her teachers and told them she would not be returning to school.
She was believed to have run away, Perrine said. Officers searched for her for days, with one officer assigned the sole task of combing social media for clues.
Perrine expressed gratitude for the community interest and help in the investigation.
Megan remains in her grandmother's custody. An investigation is ongoing.
