CHARLESTON, W.Va. - A fight between neighbors in Fayette County turned fatal when one man shot another in his Glen Jean home.
Fayette deputies were dispatched at 2 a.m. Wednesday to a home in the Mountainair Mobile Home Park in Glen Jean to investigate a shooting. They found Gary Wayne Smith, 22, of Hilltop, lying on the floor in a home with a single gunshot wound to his torso, according to a statement by the Fayette Sheriff's Department.
Smith was taken to Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill. where he was later pronounced dead.
Deputies said that not long after they arrived Matthew Paul Gravley, 29, of Hilltop came out of a house near where the victim was found. He was carrying a handgun but dropped it at deputies' orders. He was taken into custody without incident, authorities said.
A preliminary investigation shows the men were close neighbors and that the incident began with an argument. Deputies believe that Gravley fired at least two shots, one of which struck Smith.
Smith's body was taken to the Medical Examiner's office for an autopsy.
Gravley was charged with first-degree murder. He is being held at Southern Regional Jail without bond.
