Woman who hit trooper with car pleads not guilty to charges

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A woman who hit a state trooper with her car in a St. Albans parking lot pleaded not guilty Monday to charges against her.

Jennifer Elaine Garretson, 35, of St. Albans was indicted by a Kanawha Grand Jury on charges of malicious wounding, fleeing from police in vehicle causing bodily injury, aiding escape and other offenses relating to adults and juveniles in custody or confinement and petit larceny.

Off-duty state trooper Aaron Nichols was in the Goody's store in St. Albans on New Year's Eve when Garretson fled the store with stolen merchandise and set off alarms.

He attempted to apprehend Garretson in the parking lot and landed on the hood of her car. Witnesses said she then veered repeatedly until he was thrown from the car.

Nichols was seriously injured in the incident. Her trial date has been set for Aug. 5. Garretson was on parole from Lakin Correctional Center, where she served a sentence for drug and false check offenses. She remains in South Central Regional Jail on a $150,000 bond.
