Officers with the Kanawha County Sheriff's department have identified the Poca man who was shot in the face in Institute over the weekend.
The victim was named as 51-year-old Richard Lee Saunders, who was shot with a .380 caliber handgun, Cpl. B.D. Humphreys said in a news release.
Detectives now have "persons of interest" in the case, Humphreys said, but are still conducting interviews and analyzing evidence.
The shooting happened just after 8:30 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of Smoot Avenue and Carver Street in Institute. Kanawha sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the intersection to investigate a shooting after residents reported hearing gunshots in the area.
Saunders was taken to Charleston Area Medical Center's General Hospital for treatment, but was not listed as a patient as of Wednesday morning.
Investigators continue to ask that anyone with information on the shooting contact the sheriff's office at 304-357-0169. Callers may remain anonymous.
