CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A tractor-trailer was in flames and three people were injured in a crash that closed the northbound lanes of the West Virginia Turnpike in Raleigh County.
A dispatcher at the Parkways Authority said it happened just after 2:30 p.m. in the northbound lanes at the 43 mile-marker, which is between the Mabscott and Harper Road exits.
Dispatchers said a vehicle crossed the median from the southbound lanes and crashed head on into a Fed-Ex tractor-trailer heading north.
The truck was on fire at the scene. Fire crews and State Police were at the scene. The crash still is under investigation.
Three people were injured. One was flown from the scene to a hospital. Two others were taken by ambulance.
Northbound lanes were closed at the crash site. Dispatchers said first responders at the scene estimated the road would be closed for six hours.
Motorists heading north were being re-routed onto Interstate 64 to the Beckley exit and onto U.S. 19. Drivers also could take the Turnpike at the North Beckley onramp.
