CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Authorities said a Raleigh County man swindled thousands from an elderly woman in Fayette County.
Joey Scott Voiers, 44, of Beckley, was arrested Wednesday and charged with obtaining money under false pretenses and financial exploitation of the elderly after a lengthy investigation led by the Fayette Sheriff's Department. Both charges are felonies.
Detectives investigated Voiers for months, and the charges against him allege he exploited the victim from 2008 to early 2013, when the matter was reported to deputies, according to a sheriff's department statement.
"The information gathered during this investigation indicates that Joey Voiers began renting an apartment from this elderly female around 2008 and agreed to perform repairs and renovations to her residence in exchange for a reduced rate of rent," Sheriff Steve Kessler said in the release.
"He apparently gradually won the trust of this elderly female and then began taking financial advantage of her."
Voiers allegedly obtained payment for repairs and renovations that were either not performed or weren't performed to an acceptable standard on a historic Fayetteville building the victim owned.
He also had the victim co-sign for a car loan, and pay his car insurance, cable bill and cellphone bill, deputies said in the release. He also is accused of spending thousands on her credit card and taking several thousand more from her bank account.
"Instead of paying rent it appears that he convinced this elderly female to pay all of his bills and provide him with large amounts of cash," Kessler said. "Several of the checks that were cashed by Mr. Voiers were apparently cashed at a time that this elderly female was either in a local hospital or in a skilled nursing facility."
Voiers was free on $50,000 bond after his arraignment in Fayette Magistrate Court.
