CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A Lincoln County man is behind bars for the brutal murder of an Elkview man late last month.
Steven Michael Randolph, 25, of Sod, was arrested Thursday and arraigned before Magistrate Ward Harshbarger.
Randolph was charged with first-degree murder in the death of David Lemons, 28, who was found dead in his Darlington Lane mobile home on May 20.
Cpl. Brian Humphreys, Kanawha Sheriff's Department spokesman, said detectives had examined a great deal of evidence and interviewed many witnesses by June 6. An arrest warrant for Randolph was sought after consulting with the county prosecutor's office.
A friend had come to visit, and when Lemons didn't come to the door, he looked inside and made the grisly discovery. Kanawha deputies went to the mobile home and found the front and back doors padlocked from the outside, according to a complaint filed in Kanawha Magistrate Court.
Lemons lived in the trailer alone. His body was found on the living room floor. Detectives said at the time there was no sign of forced entry and that no weapons were found inside.
There were visible signs of a struggle and blood found in Lemons' home. An autopsy performed at the state Medical Examiner's office showed Lemons died of multiple blunt and sharp force injuries.
Witnesses told detectives that Randolph and his wife, Paige, were the last two seen at Lemons' home. The pair primarily lives in their silver Dodge Neon but had been staying at Lemons home the night of May 19. Witnesses said Lemons sold heroin and was known to have a stash of drugs and cash in the house, but a search turned up neither and his wallet also was missing.
The couple told deputies in an interview that they left at about 3 a.m. and slept in their car that night in another location. Surveillance video from a school bus showed the silver Dodge parked at Lemons' home at 7:36 a.m. on May 20.
The couple checked in to the Best Way Inn in Kanawha City later that morning using cash. Surveillance video from the motel showed Randolph exiting the vehicle with cloth wrapped around his arm while his wife wiped down the rear and passenger side of the car.
A motel employee told deputies Paige said someone had died and asked that the staff tell no one they were there, the complaint said. The couple did not leave the car parked on the motel lot.
Tests revealed blood on the couple's clothes and inside the car.
Detectives located Randolph Thursday afternoon and arrested him. No charges have been filed against Paige Randolph as of Thursday.
Steven Randolph is being held at South Central Regional Jail without bond.
