ARDEN, W.Va. — Barbour County officials say a ban on swimming at Pleasant Creek Wildlife Management Area could drive more swimmers to a popular but deadly hangout in the Tygart Valley River.
The site known as Party Rock near Arden has been the scene of numerous drownings over the years. The site gets its name from a large rock in the river.
Barbour County Sheriff John Hawkins tells The Exponent-Telegram (http://bit.ly/11AaYO2 ) that the current is strong and can sweep swimmers under water. They then get stuck.
County Commissioner Phil Hart says the site isn't far from the wildlife management area. He says the commission is considering installing signs to warn the public about the river's dangers.
