CHARLESTON, W.Va. - A crash on Interstate 77 near the Interstate 79 split sent three people to the hospital.
Kanawha Metro 911 dispatchers said a car crashed about 3:45 p.m. Wednesday into a rock face on the southbound side of Interstate 77 near the point where it meets Interstate 79. The vehicle caught fire with three people trapped inside.
Charleston firefighters rushed to the scene along with State Police. First responders told dispatchers the vehicle's occupants were moving.
Firefighters and troopers were able to free the people from the car. The three were taken to Charleston Area Medical Center's General Hospital. Their condition was unknown.
Trooper K.M. Williams said the vehicle was heading north on Interstate 77 when it collided with a tractor-trailer, careened through the median and across the southbound lanes into a rock face.
The southbound lanes reopened about two hours after the crash.
