CHARLESTON, W.Va. - A Braxton County woman's 8-year-old son's decomposed body was discovered wrapped in a blanket during a juvenile welfare check, authorities said.
Valarie Brown, 38, of Sutton, was arrested Wednesday at her Salt Lick Road home following the discovery.
State Police Trooper G.H. Jones went to the home to assist Hospice employee Amy Bailes with the welfare check, according to a criminal complaint. When he arrived, Brown was on the front porch, and Bailes was telling her she needed to check on the boy's wellbeing.
Brown told Jones and Bailes that the boy, identified only as "L.B" in the complaint, wasn't at home.
Bailes again asked to enter, repeating she needed to check on the boy. Brown agreed to let them in, but said, "Please do not hurt L.B.," according to the complaint.
Inside, they found "L.B." dead and wrapped in a blanket. Jones also noted in the complaint the body was partially decomposed.
Brown is being held at Central Regional Jail in Sutton. Magistrate Robert D. Hamil set her bond at $100,000 cash only.
