The woman who is accused of running over a State Police trooper after he tried to stop her from shoplifting has a continued trial date set for 9 a.m. Oct. 28.
Jennifer Garretson, 35, of St. Albans set off the front alarms in Goody's clothing store at the mall on New Year's Eve. Witnesses said Sgt. Aaron Nichols, who was off duty, identified himself as an officer and chased the woman, trying to get her to stop, according to a complaint filed in Kanawha Magistrate Court.
Nichols pursued Garretson to her gray 1993 Honda Accord. Nichols was nearly struck by the vehicle and jumped onto the truck to minimize the impact, according to previous Daily Mail reports.
Witnesses told investigators the woman accelerated, trying to dislodge him from the vehicle, according to the complaint.
Garretson was indicted by a Kanawha Grand Jury on charges of malicious wounding, fleeing from police in vehicle causing bodily injury, aiding escape and other offenses relating to adults and juveniles in custody or confinement and petit larceny.
Garretson pleaded not guilty on April 15 to charges against her.
She had been on parole from Lakin Correctional Center, where she served a sentence for drug and false check offenses.Tiffany Laton of the Kanawha Circuit Clerk's office said the trial has been continued to further prepare.
