CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A former "Buckwild" cast member was arrested after totaling his car while allegedly driving under the influence.
Joseph Patrick Mulcahy, 22, of Charleston, was arrested Tuesday afternoon.
Mulcahy was known as "Joey" on the reality-based show, which aired only one season before MTV canceled it in the wake of cast member Shain Gandee's untimely death.
Gandee, his uncle and a friend were found dead of carbon monoxide poisoning in his pickup on April 1. The three were at a local bar before they got stuck. Carbon monoxide poisoning was ruled as the cause of death.
State Police were dispatched Tuesday afternoon to the 5300 block of Sissonville Drive where a vehicle had rolled over into a ditch.
When Trooper J.S. Pauley arrived he found Sissonville volunteer firefighters and a totaled Mitsubishi Lancer, but no driver, according to a criminal complaint.
The firefighters told Pauley the driver, later identified as Mulcahy, had gone home with his father. Pauley contacted Joey Mulcahy's father and asked him to bring his son back to the scene. They arrived minutes later.
The younger Mulcahy told the trooper he panicked and went home with his father, the complaint said. He repeatedly told Pauley he "was scared" and that it had been his reason for leaving.
The trooper noted in the complaint that Mulcahy's breath and body smelled strongly of alcohol and that his speech was slurred. The young man also had glassy, bloodshot eyes.
Mulcahy told the officer he had several beers before the crash.
He refused to take any field sobriety tests, but did perform a field breath test, which recorded his blood alcohol level at .207, more than twice the legal limit of .08. A secondary breath test performed at the State Police detachment in South Charleston registered .187.
Mulcahy was charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving and failure to report an accident. Kanawha Magistrate Kim Aaron arraigned him on the charges late Tuesday.
It was unclear if Mulcahy was injured. He was released on a $1,000 personal recognizance bond.
