CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Authorities are following some leads regarding a shooting at Southmoor Hills Apartments near South Charleston High School where a man possibly armed with an AK-47 fired several shots on Thursday night.
A report of a shooting came into Metro 911 just after 9:30 p.m. Thursday at 5000 Colonial Park Drive at Southmoor Hills Apartments. When police arrived on the scene several more shots were fired and the suspect fled the area, said South Charleston Police Chief Brad Rinehart.
A man who was the victim of a robbery was transported to an area hospital for evaluation but was not injured, he said. Several items that were stolen were recovered when the robber dropped them fleeing from the scene.
Several law enforcement agencies responded to the scene of the shootings and a search ensued.
Rinehart said he commends all law enforcement agencies that participated in the search including state police, Kanawha County Sheriff's Office, Charleston Police Department, St. Albans Police Department and Dunbar Police Department.
"Everyone did an incredible job," Rinehart said.
Authorities used police dogs, a helicopter and a SWAT team to search the area.
Officers went door to door at the apartment complex, he said. However, with no good description of the suspect the shooter could have answered one of the knocks, he said.
The search was called off at 2 a.m. Friday but several leads are being followed, Rinehart said late Friday afternoon.
He said he had been questioned about the decision to have classes at South Charleston High School on Friday. However, he felt confident that opening the school was the right thing to do and the shootings were an isolated incident.
