The daughter-in-law of a former West Virginia Attorney General was in Kanawha Circuit Court Tuesday to be arraigned on a charge of burglary.
Mary Elizabeth Browning, 33, of Charleston pleaded not guilty to the charge. She is being held at South Central Regional Jail on a $40,000 cash bond.
Prosecutors cited Browning's prior criminal history involving drugs and objected to her bond being lowered. Circuit Judge Charles King agreed.
She told the judge that a trust fund would be used to pay her bond.
In 2011, she married Charles P. Browning, the son of the late Chauncey H. Browning. He was attorney general from 1069 to 1985. He died in 2010 at the age of 75.
Charles Browning faces charges of child neglect after an incident in May at his Virginia Street apartment. Police were called by neighbors who heard his 19-month-old son crying for hours.
When they arrived at the home, the boy was strapped in a stroller and they said Browning appeared to be under the influence of narcotics. The child was placed with Child Protective Services.Mary Browning's case is set for trial Oct. 28.
