FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- An inmate who was released after swapping identification bracelets with another prisoner is back in custody.
Media outlets report that U.S. Marshals arrested Kevin Lee Gregory of Fairmont around 6 p.m. Wednesday at a residence in Buckhannon.
State Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety spokesman Lawrence Messina says Gregory swapped ID bracelets and clothing with North Central Regional Jail inmate Bruce Clayton.
Clayton was scheduled to appear in court in Marion County on Tuesday. Messina says Gregory appeared in court instead of Clayton and was released on home confinement. Gregory then walked out of the Marion County Courthouse in street clothes.
The Marshals Service says Gregory was arrested in June for failing to register as a sex offender in Virginia.
