Vandalism blamed for white substance spilled into Kanawha River
An act of vandalism sent white latex concrete additive into the Kanawha River in Charleston, authorities said.
Kathy Cosco, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Environmental Protection, said the office received a report Thursday of a white paint-looking substance going down into the Kanawha River at Magic Island.
She said it appeared to have been the result of an act of vandalism on a Department of Highways truck parked in the area. The latex substance leaked out of the truck and down into the water.
It did not appear that any fish or aquatic life were harmed. She said any fish right in the immediate area of the spill could have been affected, as latex paint sucks the oxygen out of the water, but that the river is large enough that the fish could get away. The matter is under investigation. Crews were at the site of the spill to clean it up Thursday afternoon.
