Police seek suspect in car theft at Elkview gas station
Deputies are looking for an Ohio man accused of stealing a car from a gas station customer in Elkview.
An 84-year-old Elkview man was finishing his transaction at the cashier window just after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday just after fueling his Nissan Sentra at the Kroger fuel station at Crossings Mall when his car was stolen, Kanawha Sheriff's spokesman Cpl. Brian Humphreys said.
Deputy S.W. Hunter responded quickly and was told the suspect was a white man wearing a red zip-up sweatshirt.
Hunter reviewed surveillance footage from that morning and noticed the suspect talking with the drivers of a flat-bed roll-back wrecker and a white, older-model limousine. Deputies at the scene spotted those vehicles elsewhere in the shopping center and spoke to the occupants, Humphreys said.
The suspect was identified after speaking with witnesses as Anthony Konopinski, 21, of Seville, Ohio. Deputies found that he is wanted on numerous charges in Ohio.
A warrant for his arrest charging him with grand larceny was issued Tuesday afternoon. Humphreys said Konopinski also has relatives in the Morgantown and Logan areas.
