FAYETTEVILLE, W.Va. (AP) - A former Smithers Volunteer Fire Department chief will spend up to 10 years in prison for embezzling from the department.
Media outlets report that 56-year-old Timothy Whittington was sentenced Monday in Fayette Circuit Court.
Whittington had pleaded guilty to an embezzlement charge on Aug. 9.
Prosecutors say Whittington took thousands of dollars from the fire department's account between July 2010 and September 2012. He used the money for personal expenses.
As part of the plea deal, a fraudulent scheme charge against Whittington's wife, Patricia, was dismissed.
Whittington resigned in February.
