A Charleston woman is facing a felony charge after being accused of pocketing thousands from a local private pool.
Kara Michelle Duncan, 38, of Kit Road was arrested Monday and charged with embezzlement. Duncan was elected president of the Greenbrier Pool Associates in September 2012 and also handled the bookkeeping for the organization.
Duncan allegedly wrote multiple checks either to herself or to cash over the last year and used the money for personal gain, according to a complaint filed in Kanawha Magistrate Court. She would then change the accounting entries in the ledgers to hide the transactions.
Charleston detectives say she also used the group's check card for personal gain.
Duncan admitted to embezzling at least $35,000 over the last year, with at least $1,000 taken from September 2012 to April 2013 and $1,000 more from May 2013 to September 2013.She is free on bond. A preliminary hearing on the matter will be at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 8.
