CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Five people were arrested after allegedly beating and stunning a man while mugging him at a gas station in Charleston.
Juan Carlos Chapman, 23, Roland Brungard, 22, Stephon Lamont Thomas, 22, Chardene Letitia Cope, 21, and Lauren Beattrice Watson, 19, were arrested late Sunday night in the 800 block of Bigley Avenue in connection with a brutal robbery that occurred at a nearby gas station.
The victim was walking across the parking lot at Go-Mart on Bigley Avenue about 7 p.m. Sunday when he two men approached and asked him if he wanted to buy marijuana, said Sgt. Tony Hazelett, Charleston assistant chief of detectives. He declined the drugs but then was beaten.
Hazelett said one of the men punched the victim in the face. When the victim, a 31-year-old Clendenin man, fell to the ground, the second man began kicking him in the ribs and stomach. A third man went through the victim's pockets and removed $40.
The sergeant wouldn't specify which man committed what alleged act but said Cope served as a lookout. He said the victim at one point tried to stand but that Watson shocked him from behind with a stun gun, causing him to fall to the ground again.
The victim was able to get up and run from the area but was chased away by the group of bandits when he returned to the parking lot for his shirt and jacket, Hazelett said. The victim ran west away from the group, which at that point went north on Bigley.
The victim was taken to Charleston Area Medical Center's General Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and released, Hazelett said.
A store clerk called 911 and witnesses at the scene were able to describe the five suspects, the sergeant said. Officers caught up to them shortly after the incident.
Chapman, Cope, Watson, Thomas and Brungard were charged with first-degree robbery. Watson also faces a felony charge of possession of marijuana with intent to deliver.
They are being held at South Central Regional Jail, each on $10,000 bond.
