Crash near Clendenin kills woman

By From staff reports

A Roane County woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash near Clendenin, deputies said.

The fatal wreck happened just after 8:30 p.m. Wednesday on U.S. 119 near Clendenin. It was raining at the time.

An investigation into the crash showed that Gerlethia Mason, 45, of Garner, N.C., had been driving north when she lost control of her vehicle and crashed into a vehicle coming from the opposite direction, said Cpl. Brian Humphreys, spokesman for the Kanawha Sheriff's Department.

Ramona Abbott, 53, of Walton was behind the wheel of the southbound vehicle.

Both women were taken to Charleston Area Medical Center's General Hospital, where Abbott died of her injuries. Mason remained at General Thursday afternoon though her condition was unknown, according to operators at the hospital. The sheriff's department's Motor Vehicle Crash Reconstruction team is investigating the crash.
