Authorities say a Raleigh County man knew the elderly man he is accused of carjacking and shooting to death.
At first it appeared that Mickey Roger Daniel Jr., 29, of Edwight, shot and killed Johnny Nile Condia, 77, of Dameron, during a car jacking near Arnett, but now Raleigh sheriff's detectives say the two knew each other, according to a statement by the sheriff's department.
"After thorough investigation, it has been determined that the victim and suspect in this case knew each other, and had intentionally met that evening," the statement read.
It happened in the evening of Oct. 11 on Saxon Bolt Road in Arnett. Condia was found lying in the road with a gunshot wound. He told deputies the shooter also took his, detectives said.
Condia died of his injuries at Raleigh General Hospital. His car was found and searched. Detectives eventually were led to Daniel, who was arrested Sunday and charged with murder.
Detectives said in the statement that it appears Daniel intended to rob Condia when the shooting occurred. It was initially thought that Daniel was working with someone but it now appears he was working alone.
Daniel remains in Southern Regional Jail, where he is being held without bond.
