A man was exercising poor gun safety when he allegedly shot a woman through the wall of a Charleston apartment.
It happened Saturday evening in an apartment building in the 1400 block of Quarrier Street. A woman, whose name has not been released, had been walking upstairs when a bullet came through the wall and struck her in the shoulder, Charleston detectives said.
The woman was taken to Charleston Area Medical Center's General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The shot was fired inside the apartment building. The bullet traveled through the building's interior and exterior walls, Sgt. Tony Hazelett, assistant chief of detectives, said Sunday afternoon.
John Tucker initially left the scene but returned a short time later and called detectives, Hazelett said. The sergeant said the man was not familiar with the gun and that it apparently went off as the result of improper handling.
Tucker was not in police custody Sunday afternoon.Hazelett said detectives would turn their findings over to the Kanawha County Prosecutor's Office to determine what, if any, charges should be filed against Tucker.
