PHILIPPI, W.Va. -- A Belington couple who allegedly gave a toddler illegally purchased methadone to make her sleep was indicted in the child's death Monday.
Authorities say 31-year-old Ida Lee Evans administered the drug to the 23-month-old girl, and 38-year-old David Lee Delauder did nothing about.
The child died in March.
State Police say Evans administered the methadone the night before, and Delauder made no attempt to call 911 or have the child checked out when he learned of the ingestion. Police say the couple bought the drug on the street.
The Exponent-Telegram (http://bit.ly/17U356g) says they are charged with death of a child by parent or guardian. Barbour County Prosecutor Leckta Poling said each could face 10-40 years in prison if convicted.
Evans remained jailed Monday. Her public defender, Jamella Lockwood, didn't immediately return a phone message.
Delauder has been released. His public defender, Roger Curry, didn't immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
