Money missing from the Mason County Sheriff's Association's Shop with a Cop holiday event has prompted a State Police investigation.
The association contracted a solicitor to run a fundraising drive to benefit its Shop with a Cop program for the upcoming holiday season. The drive was conducted primarily in Mason County and in Ohio's Meigs and Gallia counties, according to a statement by State Police.
The solicitor, which has not been named, contacted residents and businesses by phone and then sent a person to collect the donation.
The fundraiser is over, but it appeared some of the funds were deposited to the sheriff's association's bank account, prompting them to contact State Police. Troopers said it appeared some donations weren't deposited.
Troopers now are investigating the solicitor for fraud, according to the statement.
Troopers ask all donors to contact the Lakin Correctional Facility detachment near Point Pleasant. Troopers can be reached at 304-675-0850.
