CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Three men are facing felony charges after a brutal robbery that left a Hernshaw man badly beaten with a serious wound to the head.
The three men, identified as Kevin Walton, 25, Demetran Gray, 35, of Scarbro and Zachariah Woodson, 26, of Boomer were arrested after allegedly forcing their way into a Hernshaw man's home late Wednesday night.
Police arrested Walton on Sunday, Gray on Saturday and Woodson on Friday. The three are being held at Southern Regional Jail.
State Police and Kanawha sheriff's deputies responded late Wednesday to a home on Lens Creek Road after Roy Roe Jr., called 911 to report that three men had robbed him and also that he'd been shot in the head, according to a complaint filed in Kanawha Magistrate Court.
Trooper A.B. Wilson noted in the complaint that Roe seemed disoriented and was bleeding from a wound on the back of his head. Roe told the trooper during an interview at Charleston Area Medical Center's General Hospital that he had been alone in his home when he heard a knock at the back door.
He found three men, two of whom were wearing masks, on the other side. The men forced their way in and two searched the home while one held him down, the complaint said. The men demanded the location of cash in the home and gained access to a safe that held about $600.
Roe said the three then stood around him in the kitchen and that he'd been shot in the head by the man who hadn't worn a mask into the house. He later identified Woodson as the shooter.
Troopers arrested Woodson late Thursday in Glen Jean. Woodson told troopers that he, Gray and Walton went to the Lens Creek Road home and forced their way inside, the complaint said. He said the handgun went off as Gray was striking Roe in the back of the head with the weapon and that the round struck Roe in the head, the complaint said.
Woodson told troopers that Roe had been lying in the floor bleeding when Gray hauled him up into a chair and continued beating him. Woodson said he and Walton searched the house while Gray continued his assault.
Roe's condition Monday wasn't immediately known. A hospital operator at CAMC did not have a record of him as a patient at the hospital.
Woodson was charged with armed robbery and attempted murder. Walton was charged with aggravated robbery. Gray was charged with armed robbery.
The three remain in Southern Regional Jail-Walton on $50,000 bond, Gray on $100,000 bond and Woodson on $150,000 bond. A preliminary hearing for Gray and Woodson was set for Nov. 25.
