A Mingo County man is facing sexual abuse and assault charges after allegedly molesting a young female family member at his home.
Gary Adkins, 52, of Delbarton, was arrested Tuesday and charged with third-degree sexual assault, third-degree sexual abuse and sexual abuse by a custodian.
State Police began investigating in July after the 7-year-old victim's mother told Child Protective Services the little girl told her about the abuse, according to a complaint filed in Mingo Magistrate Court.
The girl told her mother that Adkins made her play with his belly button in the summer of 2012. The mother noticed then that her daughter's behavior changed, that the girl was clinging to her more, was unusually focused on cleanliness and did not want to go back to Adkins' home, the complaint said.
The victim's mother said the young girl was also hesitant to touch things if she believed Adkins had also touched them and frequently prays to God to forgive all of her sins.
The girl's 13-year-old brother told troopers during an interview in September that he saw Adkins rub the girl over her clothing while she sat on his lap, the complaint said. The boy told troopers that they left the house after he saw she was in distress.
Troopers also spoke to a 28-year-old relative of the victim who had known Adkins her entire life. Her family made yearly trips to Adkins' home. She said he also touched her inappropriately while she was at his home from the ages of 7 to 10, according to the complaint.
The young victim told investigators that Adkins touched her over and under her clothing, the complaint said.
Adkins is free on bond.
