Woman found dead in river identified
Authorities released the identity of the woman found dead in the Elk River in Braxton County.
Barba Chapman, 82, of Lee Street in Gassaway, was found dead in the Elk River late Monday night, Braxton Deputy W.L. Alderman said Wednesday afternoon.
Chapman was last seen alive at about 2 p.m. Monday. Her body was found at about 11:15 p.m. that night in the river south of the Elk Street bridge, not far from her home. She had not been reported missing.
Alderman said the incident is not being investigated as suspicious and that deputies still are waiting on an autopsy report from the state Medical Examiner's Office. Chapman was the former owner of the Dairy Queen on Elk Street. Deputies said her son now owns the shop.
